A lot of startups are switching the traditional 9 to 6 job to flexible working hours. No fixed hours. No need to sit in the office. As long as all the deadlines are met and the objectives are achieved, of course.
However, many other companies are also looking for ways to level the playing field in the workforce but often struggle with what policies or organizational changes to make. Here are some of the specifics changes the startups made and the lessons learned.
1. Work From Home Tuesday
If you are not sure if your team can manage flexible working hours, maybe you can starting with a work from home Tuesday (well it’s not necessary to be on Tuesday, but one of the day from Tuesday to Thursday would probably be better, as Monday and Friday are usually good for discussion, planning and wrap up meetings.)
2. No Negotiation Salary
Some people are generally good with negotiation, but when you realize two people doing two same job, but one got a better paid just because the person is a better negotiator or had joined the company at a time when they were more willing to negotiate.
Probably wanted to make sure the compensation rewarded people for the skills required for the job, not the ability to negotiate.
“If you’re our general counsel, negotiation is part of your job. If you’re a software engineer, negotiation has nothing to do with what we need you to do and what we’re paying you for.”
3.Remote Hiring
Hiring a person out of city or country where you office located at, that’s not a problem! It’s the impact we value, not seeing someone’s faces every day. If you need to sit next to someone to make sure they are effective, chances are you haven’t made the best hire. However, you can always invest in the resources like high quality audio/video conference call equipment to ensure the communication with the remote team members is as seamless as possible.
We are constantly working on to get to the point of work life balance, which is to create an inclusive environment that gives everyone the opportunity to learn, grow and find professional success. The main evolution for some companies competing for the best talent is to develop a workplace that recognizes and embraces the personal demands we all face.

Although at times I feel that I'm lucky to be a work from home mum (or more like flexible working environment), but actually being a work from home mum is actually sucks.

My timing is flexible but which also means my working hours are flexible too, that sometimes I might even work throughout the night, especially if I am rushing through a project (like now).

Sometimes it sucks that is no annual leave, no MC and no rest day. So pardon me if I don't response to your msg, please just send or call me again. Not coz I don't like u ok 😂😘

Pulling hair and meltdowns is unavoidable especially if your kids (plus a newborn) are not cooperative and if you have a deadline to rush.

And another guilt is u can't accompany your kids to play even though they are freaking right in front of you.
I always tell my kids "Please don't disturb me, let me finish this and I can play with u"

That is why I always make a point to cook dinner for them, at least I can spend a bit of time with them and make their favorite dish.

I do wonder at times if this was the best decision I ever make. I couldn't give myself a correct answer. Because both FTWM, SAHM have its own set of shits and worries. I just hope my kids will understand whatever decision I make is for me to see you more often and to be there for you as much as possible.

So to all Mummies out there, no matter which decisions you makes, being a mum is already a tough job, so don't be so hard to yourself.
